(Note:  This post is part of a series based on my free eBook, 13 Ways to Get More Twitter Followers.  If you don't have your copy yet, please feel free to get one here)

Why do you want to know how more followers on Twitter?  Besides the obvious end result of wanting to experience real results in your business and boost your profit, of course.

If you're serious about being recognized as a thought leader in your niche, knowing how to get more followers on Twitter is naturally part of sharing your message with as many people as possible.

But ultimately – getting more followers on Twitter is secondary, if you want to be a thought leader.  First and foremost, if you are looking to position yourself as a leader in your niche, you want to Tweet quality content!

Tweeting quality content is the best strategy for how to get more followers on Twitter because it's exactly how Twitter is meant to be used.  When all is said and done, the point of all of these strategies isn't about gaming the system to boost your numbers.  It's about helping expose your content to more and more people who are going to be so impressed by the value you provide that not only do they follow you, but they consciously look forward to your Tweets because you enrich their lives and businesses on a regular basis.

How to Get More Followers On Twitter By Providing Valuable Content

I can just about hear you asking the question in your head, "How do I know what is valuable content?"

One way is to look at the people you follow – what is it about their Tweets you find valuable?

My guess is that when you look at the kinds of Tweets are worthy of your own devotion, you'll see that they're either:

  • Valuable
  • Interesting
  • Inspirational
  • Humorous
  • Helpful

What might fall in these categories?  Social media experts like Dan Zarella at Hubspot have written about trends regarding what gets retweeted most often, assuming that people are more likely to retweet content they find valuable.

One kind of content that gets retweeted often is content containing links to websites.  So at a minimum, one way of providing valuable content is to Tweet links to your own posts.  Tweets that include the words "New blog post" are also on the high-retweet list, so you absolutely should be tweeting whenever you provide new content on your blog.  (You are blogging, right?)

One way to maximize use of your well-written content is also to retweet older content from time to time.  As your follower list grows, there will be people who might not have seen earlier posts of yours.  So make sure you're tweeting some of your earlier content as well.

Other kinds of content you might consider tweeting includes inspirational quotes, links to how-to videos, interesting trivia related to your field, humor, and more.  Each of these kinds of content provides value to your audience, who in turn might be inspired to retweet your content to their followers, thus encouraging them to follow you as well.

Providing content that your followers just can't help but share with their own follower base is one of the best ways how to get more followers on Twitter (though I probably said that about all of the techniques I've shared in this series – they just work that well!)

But knowing how to get more followers on Twitter is that important, and I understand that. As someone who has built my own business in social media by using the very techniques I'm describing, I can tell you that this is exactly how your business presence online grows, link by link and follower by follower.

Of course I've learned many more techniques for building my business by getting more Twitter followers. It'd be my pleasure to share them with you in my free eBook, 13 Ways To Get More Twitter Followers.  If you've found this 5-part series to be helpful in growing your Twitter following, you'll appreciate the additional 8 strategies to build your Twitter following in both quality and quantity and enjoy the business profits that result.

    • As long as the content is still relevant and up to date, it’s should still be okay to share with others on Twitter.

  8. These are good tips, but just let me say one thing, on Twitter even more important than the number of followers that you have, is having "quality" followers truly interested in your brand or businesss

    • Oh yeah, of course! You make a great point there. “Quality” will always trump “Quantity”, especially when building a following that is actually interested in your brand/business.

  9. Thank you Edmund for the informative article on getting more followers. It is a great guideline!

  10. Is it considered "spammy" for a brand to follow lots of people on Twitter?  Is a 1:1 ratio of folling to followers acceptable?

    • No, I don’t believe it is spammy to follow lots of people.  By doing so, it allows for an open interaction through DM’s (if needed).
