Promote Yourself When Possible: How to Get More Followers On Twitter The Shameless Way

(Note: This post is part of a series based on my free eBook, 13 Ways to Get More Twitter Followers.  If you don't have your copy yet, please feel free to get one here)

What's the difference between someone you love to follow on Twitter and someone whose Tweets make you cringe?

Let me take a wild guess – the Tweets you can't stand are the ones that are full of shameless self promotion.  You know the kind I'm talking about.  From the moment you connect with someone, you get an obviously automated follow back message with its 120 characters crammed with as much self promoting information as possible.  Then every Tweet thereafter tells you why you need their product, how many of their product they've sold, and where to click to buy their product now.

Ugh – just typing that makes me feel like I need a shower with that kind of pure sleaze!

That's not the way to promote yourself on Twitter (or off!), and it's definitely not in line with my strategies for how to get more followers, either.

But you can and should be promoting yourself on Twitter, and it's another proven strategy to attract more quality, targeted followers who are interested in what your business has to offer.

So -  how to get more followers on Twitter using self promotion – without having to be ashamed of your marketing tactics?

How To Get More Followers on Twitter Using Self Promotion (The Right Way)

The most overlooked way for how to get more followers on Twitter by promoting yourself is to help people find you!  This can include putting your Twitter link on all of your communication, both online and off.  Places you should include your Twitter link are:

  • On your website (use a link and/or a Twitter icon)
  • In your e-mail signature
  • On your business cards
  • In your Facebook "About" section
  • In your LinkedIn profile
  • On your YouTube info section and in your videos.

What makes these forms of self promotion different than the ones I mentioned early on (with obvious plugs for your service and product in every Tweet?)

All of these feature one thing only – the opportunity to connect with you.  By providing your Twitter handle in various places where you are setting up profiles, connecting with other people and providing quality information for potential customers, you are providing value first, promoting yourself second.  For starters, this is just plain good manners, which naturally makes you someone that others want to do business with.  And honestly, if you've provided value for people, they're more naturally going to trust you as a thought-leader and turn to you when they're ready to do business.

Promoting yourself on Twitter the right way and being truly social with this form of social media is the best strategy for how to get more followers on Twitter and boost the number of targeted prospects coming to your website.

Are you using all of these ways to promote your Twitter presence?  If you've missed any, go add a link to your Twitter profile to them now, and tell me in a comment below!

  11. Great advice here Edmund, thanks. The sad thing I find is that many people who are sending these hypey promotional tweets aren't really bad people, they've just been taught to do things the wrong way. I've shared your article on Twitter, hopefully they'll learn from you!

  12. You're right Edmund I have been bombarded by these type follows. I had to hire someone to manage them. Nothing I can do about it, except not to do what others do. Working on maintaining social media etiquette. Thanks for the info.
