Make a Friend List: Using Facebook Lists to Conquer Social Media Overload

Make a Friend List

Can I ask you a question?  Are you feeling overwhelmed by all of the items on your social media "to-do" list?  As you build your connections on Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook, do you find yourself drowning in the deluge of information, comments, and status updates that keep coming at you all day, every day?

Once you've begun building your presence on multiple social media platforms, it can be frankly overwhelming to keep up with the number of people and updates you need to stay engaged with your growing community.

I mean – you aren't building a business and an engaged community online only to miss important updates from your family or friends because of too much "noise," are you? And you don’t want to lose your sense of self, either, when you begin to limit postings to family members on the issues that matter to you because you're concerned it might affect how your business connections perceive you.

Honestly – do you find yourself considering making separate Facebook profiles to keep your business profile and personal profile separate?

Don't.

Why?  Quite simply, this is a violation of the terms of service you agreed to when you joined Facebook.   Not only this, but if you learn to make a friend list on Facebook (or two, or three, or however many you need), you'll not need to complicate your life this much.

Fortunately, there's a solution.  Friend Lists.  And once you learn to make a friend list on Facebook, you can make lists and sort your connections to your heart's content – without risking your account.

The benefits?

Make A Friend List on Facebook And Regain Productivity

It's true – being organized boosts your productivity, even on Facebook.  When you make a friend list on Facebook, you can adjust its settings to determine which lists' updates you see more often than others.  You can also adjust who sees if you're online and available to chat.

The bottom line: when you make a friend list on Facebook, you decrease unnecessary interruptions in your day. This is a giant leap toward conquering social media overload.

Make A Friend List on Facebook -Tailor Your Broadcasts To Multiple Audiences

When you post to Facebook, the entry box gives you the ability to select which lists and users see that particular post.  So if you'd like to post something about your daughter's ballet recital that isn't meant for your business colleagues, simply select the appropriate lists and users before clicking "Post" and it will show up in the news feed of those you've  selected.  You can even select "custom" and select specific friends whose newsfeed it should appear in.

Are you convinced yet?

Here's the quick method to make a friend list on Facebook:

1.      Log in to Facebook

2.      Click on “Friends” on the left hand column of your home screen

3.      All of your lists will be displayed

4.      Click on “+Create List” to create a new list

5.      Name your list

6.      Add your friends to your lists

7.      Repeat for as many lists as you need

When you make a friend list on Facebook, you'll want to take a few minutes to think about how many ways you might want to break down your connections.  For example, maybe you run a coaching program and want to produce different content for different groups within that program.  No problem – make a friend list on Facebook for the whole group and then additional lists for each sub group within the program.

Are you ready to put the power of Facebook friend lists to work for you and conquer the overload? I'd love to hear back from you – leave a comment below!

  2. Since my move to the Rio Grande Valley (Mission, to be exact) I created a list specifically for new people I have met that live in this area. It helps me to keep up with local activities and the goings on their lives. Great tip Edmund!

  8. Lists are the BOMB! Luckily, I have used them for some time, and adding new friends to the appropriate list(s) is almost second nature now. I have helped a few friends sort through hundreds of friends…it's a bit time consuming but well worth the trouble!
