Surprised to see business and Pinterest in the same sentence? Or maybe you know Pinterest can be part of a good social media strategy for business, but you just aren't sure how a virtual pinboard can generate more leads or close sales.

Optimizing your Pinterest for business account has a few different ways that it works. There's recognition for one, but it's also a strong SEO tool for your business website as well. (You do have a business website and blog, right?)

#1 - Use your Business Pinterest Account for Brand Recognition

Images are powerful, and they're a frequently shared kind of content on all social media platforms. Of course Pinterest makes it easy to share visual content with options to "like" and "repin" content that supports your business goals.

The best way to increase recognition of your own brand on Pinterest is to post unique content regularly. One way is to create graphics with a tip or quote on them, and make sure your URL is tastefully included as well. By sharing information, humor, or inspiration, you're providing value for a lot of people. And people like receiving value rather than a continuous sales pitch.

Also – create a unique graphic to go with each blog post and make sure to pin it with a link back to your site. As your pin is shared, you'll bring more recognition and more traffic to your site.

#2 - Use your Business Pinterest Account for Increased Website SEO

Though Pinterest links are nofollow, meaning they don't directly give you increased SEO power, certainly having multiple links to your content and your site that people can use is a great way to increase your traffic naturally.

In terms of search – don't forget that Pinterest itself is a search engine. Every time you pin, make sure your pins are searchable by keywords related to your business. Long-tail keywords with natural search language are especially strong. If your business has a physical location in a specific geographic place, consider making sure your pins all have your location, who is likely to be interested in it ("men," "women," "teens," "business owners," etc.) and what it is or what it does ("for the home," "business tools," etc.).

#3 - Create eye-catching covers for each board

From time to time, look at your collection of boards to make sure that each board features a cover that is truly eye catching. This is a visual platform, and using it well demands that you make sure your content looks great. Nothing will damage your reputation more than having visual content of poor quality on a platform that is highly visual – you will brand yourself as an amateur in the eyes of your followers.

#4 - Create keyword-rich (not stuffed) descriptions for pins and boards

I listed this within the SEO tips, but it's important enough to give attention all by itself. Make sure your boards and pins have descriptions that include a keyword or two related to your niche. Hashtags are especially useful for this, but don't overuse them in your descriptions.

#5 - Make sure images on your site have good "ALT-" and "Description-" text

Some pinners are lazy. They'll pin an image from your site, but they won't bother to change any of the information about the pin. This means that whatever you have included as the image's alt- and description tags will be pulled into Pinterest as well. Make this work in your favor by including keyword-rich information here as well.

There's a lot of noise about social media and the importance of your network these days, I'm one of the people who's making some of that noise – I'm pretty passionate about using social media to build your connections and your business.

But have you ever noticed how easy it is for someone to put up a pretty website and say anything? And if it's on a well branded page, people listen. They don't always think about what they're hearing, though, and usually don't take the time to look up any new information to make sure it's accurate.

This means there are often many people claiming to have certainty about the topic of social media and building social networks for business, but there really isn't much evidence to back them up.

	Not very comforting, is it?

The Real Truth About Social Networks for Business

#1 – Not everyone is on social media.

This probably sounds like a strange truth to lead with – I love social media! But I also know it's limited – not everyone is there, and you may well have customers who aren't there. This doesn't mean you shouldn't have strong social media marketing for your business. But building social networks for your business marketing shouldn't be your only strategy, either.

Make sure you're still reaching out to your customers and prospects via your website, e-mail, and providing good old fashioned excellent customer service in person, too.

#2 – Using social networks for business effectively isn't free.

Your social media profiles are free to set up, sure. But – learning the strategy and techniques to use it the right way, in addition to having tools to increase your productivity and measure your results, aren't free at all. If you haven't invested anything in your social media marketing, I'm going to guess you might also be among the people saying it's not working. That's like picking up a violin and expecting to be able to play without investing in lessons.

#3 – Social media is not another broadcast platform.

One of the fastest ways to get your audience to tune you out on social media is to approach it like you do any other form of broadcast media. It's not a place to pump out a "buy, buy, buy" message all hours of the day and night.

Social networks for business work best when you take the time to engage with the people who are your friends and fans. Listen and respond. Consumers expect to be able to interact with the companies they do business with online – and when they post a review, good or bad, they expect to receive an answer.

#4 – Your _____ (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest) profile does not replace your website.

If you're treating one of your social media platforms as your only online presence, you're losing the benefit of a website. Not to mention – if that network gets hacked, or they suddenly decide your profile is out of compliance or your header has too much text, you're going to be losing money quickly.

You don't own your profile on a free platform. This is the single biggest reason you need to have your own company website, one that is self hosted (not a free WordPress account).

#5 – You don't have to be on every social media network.

If you've read my content for any length of time, you know I'm a fan of multiple social media networks. But the reason is that I need to know about multiple kinds of platforms to create the best strategies for my customers to achieve their mission. Every social media network might not be right for your business or your target customers. If you're not sure which networks you belong on, a social media consultant can help you identify your target customers and determine which platforms they're most likely to be using. This way you're using your resources most effectively.

What would it mean for your business to attract high quality, loyal, and eager-to-convert prospects to your business's Facebook Fan Page? If you don't have a Facebook marketing strategy, this might remain a dream instead of your everyday reality.

Is This Your Facebook Marketing Strategy Now?

You sit down at the computer in the morning, clutching your super-grande-mocha coffee cup so tight you wonder if it will shatter in your hand. You're already behind schedule, and it's a chaotic scene as you frantically try to get your first update published before starting to work your way through your stuffed e-mail inbox.

If this is you, read on. A Facebook marketing strategy can actually take the stress out of your social media marketing activities and even free up valuable time for you to spend on other, more profitable activities in your business.

5 Facebook Marketing Strategy Hacks You Can Use Today

	#1 - Plan your content

I hate to break it to you, but throwing together your content on the fly isn't just robbing you of more time than it needs to, but it also makes it more likely your content isn't actually doing you as much good as it could.

Toward the middle or end of the week, plan out and actually schedule your posts for the following week. Create a mixture of content – some visual, some audiovisual, some text based, etc. Mix it up – people like variety, and your audience is made up of people with a variety of learning styles.

#2 – Encourage dialogue, not monologue

Do you respond in a heartfelt way when your followers and fans respond to your posts? If not, make it a point to begin today. The back and forth of dialogue is the beginning of audience engagement, one of the key tools and goals for every online marketer.

#3 – Encourage conversations among your fans

True engagement, as mentioned in the last point, is created when your audience isn't just talking with you, but also to each other. One way to do this is to take time to highlight the ways that members of your audience create value for their own audiences. Let your fans and followers get to know each other as individuals.

#4 - Let your personality show

Is it hard to imagine your personality as a marketing strategy on social media? It's true, though – the most successful companies on Facebook are the ones that have a human touch on their pages. Post like you're talking to your audience, and include some personal posts as well from time to time.

#5 – Use analytics to gauge success

If you don't have a goal and don't take the time to evaluate how close you are to it, how are you going to know if you've been successful in your marketing? Track your Facebook marketing strategy and its effectiveness by looking at measures of things like your reach, engagement, number of new likes and/or people who have "unliked" your page, conversion rates, and financial return on investment.

You're probably wondering what I mean by the question. After all, don't we normally think of SEO as something that we do to help our Google rankings – how can Google be a threat, right?

If you aren't familiar with how Google works, however, you may not realize that your carefully learned and applied SEO techniques could actually be for nothing if Google performs one of its many updates to its search algorithms. You could be optimizing your website and posts for one scenario, only to have Google flip a switch and make that very strategy harmful to your placement in search results.

SEO and Google Search: The Basics

Here's what you need to know about how Google Search works in order to understand its impact on your techniques for SEO on your website.

SEO (search engine optimization) is made up of all of the things you can do to improve how your article ranks on a Google search. The simplest way to understand it is by thinking about how you search Google. You typically don't just look for a term – you ask a question of Google. You might type, "how do I get more followers on Twitter," or you might search for "how to improve your search engine ranking" or similar questions.

The process of optimizing your site and articles for search means that you take the time to figure out what keyword, phrase, or question is the main focus of your article. You're trying to determine what search question you're answering.

Then through a process of including that term in your article in a way that gives it lots of meaning (not the same word repeated over and over, but a whole article that is cohesive and clearly about the topic at hand), your article is ranked by Google in terms of how clearly it is related to that keyword or phrase.

	Why Google Had to Change

Over the years, however, many of the "gurus" figured out how to game the system, whether by using obscure tags to feed misleading information to Google or to spam links to lots of websites' comment systems just to have lots of backlinks quickly (links in from related, high quality sites improves your search placement as well).

Google continues to try to be a relevant source of information – so when people gamed the system, Google responded. They normally work on tweaking their algorithm in small ways all the time; over the last couple of years, they released some large changes.

And for some people, the damage to SEO this Google search change caused was huge!

Why? Because in a number of ways, the folks at Google figured out how to prevent peoples' gaming of the system from benefitting their search engine results – and in some cases, figured out how to penalize such unethical methods.

This might have affected you unintentionally. You know how information travels online – sort of like a giant game of Telephone. Someone tells someone something, then it keeps getting passed on.

SEO techniques are like that! Some of the SEO practices being used today have been handed on from person to person (or from one e-course provider to the next). And some of those folks who write those systems don't always care to change them once Google changes its algorithms.

What the Google Search Changes did to SEO

Less ethical SEO people (aka black hat SEO'ers) saw a decrease in their rankings. What were the top kinds of penalized content with the Panda and Penguin updates?

 Duplicate content

 Duplicate URLs

Too many links in way that clearly appears overdone and likely spammy.

Sites whose Google ranking came from these practices saw overnight nosedives in their Google placement!

How Can You Avoid Google Lowering Your SEO

Create great content that people genuinely want to read – this is the secret to creating a site that not only do people want to read, but that Google's bots come back to again and again.

Have you been scrambling to find Google Reader alternatives to help you stay up to date and organized with your business reading given its upcoming July 1 demise?

Honestly – the Google reader alternatives out there aren't as well known as Google reader, but that just might change quickly. This past week, LinkedIn purchased a reader app known as Pulse. It's a smart business move, in my opinion. It just might provide one of the best Google Reader alternatives out there. And – even better – it's positioning LinkedIn as the go-to community of choice for serious business leaders.

Here's why the issue of finding Google reader alternatives is so important to you in your business. One of the most essential things you can do in your business to keep moving forward is to keep growing. By that, I mean that one of your "have-to-do's" on your list of regular business building activities must be staying current in your field by reading, listening to podcasts, etc.

Of course if you're just overwhelmed by too much information cluttering up your e-mail box, it can be frustrating – so being able to keep your subscriptions sorted out and easy to read via a reader application can be helpful.

And that's why I think LinkedIn just made a seriously smart move by purchasing the Pulse app.

Google Reader Alternatives: Introducing Pulse

If you're not familiar with this alternative to Google Reader, let me give you some info about this app. It's a platform that aims to give you the power to make your news reading experience your own, no matter if you're reading from a desktop or mobile device. It has 30 million users and is adding new users at an impressive rate of 1 million per month.

And in their own words – the founders of Pulse write on their site that "they seek to make news even more exciting and meaningful"

Pulse has a highly visual interface, no matter where you're reading (desktop or mobile). It's truly a beautiful way to engage with your favorite content. (And honestly, given the utilitarian approach of the Google Reader, this is a refreshing change!)

For people who enjoy staying current in their field, Pulse will make a visually appealing, almost fun to use alternative to Google Reader in my opinion. And the fact that it will be connected to LinkedIn is just plain smart.

Here's why. Many people still see LinkedIn as a place to park a resume and maybe to occasionally network for a new job, but that's about it.

By acquiring the Pulse reader, LinkedIn is showing a commitment to developing a true community for business professionals – those who want to get ahead and stay ahead by following the thought leaders in their industries.

LinkedIn is steadily working to transform itself into the online destination of choice for professionals and is now working to give people one more time to spend time on this business-oriented social network.

What about you? If industry news were easy to find and visually stunning on LinkedIn, do you think you'd spend more time on the network? Leave a comment below – I'd love to hear from you!

How to Find a Job Using LinkedIn: 3 Tips You Can Use Today

One of the most popular and powerful social networks for advancing your career and your business is LinkedIn. I've noticed a number of people starting to emphasize this platform more in recent weeks, and I think that is because people are beginning to get the clue that there is a whole lot more to this network than just putting your resume on there and connecting to the people you went to college with!

Truth be told, LinkedIn is a tremendous and powerful platform in so many ways, whether you're an entrepreneur, if you're looking for a strategic partnership, or if you are hoping to find a more traditional job in your area of expertise.

That last part is what I want to focus on today – how to use LinkedIn to find your ideal job.

How to Find a Job Using LinkedIn

When it comes to using LinkedIn to find a job – your profile is the place to begin. Optimizing your profile so that you are found by people who want the skills and experience you offer is the best thing you can do to increase your chances of finding employment quickly.

#1 – Make sure you've completed your profile

It sounds obvious, doesn't it? But – here's the thing. There are a ton of people who haven't completed their profile online, and when someone comes across your profile and sees that there are sections you haven't bothered to complete, it sends a huge red flag. If you don't care enough about your success to complete your profile, your prospective employers will assume you won't care about your work for their company.

A complete profile includes a professional picture – one that shows you in attire appropriate for the position you're seeking. For many people that will be a business suit, but there are situations in which other kinds of clothing and less formality might be appropriate. In either case, make sure that your background isn't distracting.

Also – use the headline! This is one of the most useful pieces of real estate your profile offers! Make sure that you include what makes you unique, not just the position you're looking for. Anyone can do that – find a way to stand out.

Make sure that the summary matches your resume, and that it includes information that communicates who you are, what you're all about, and what you bring to the table as an employee.

#2 – Get recommendations

Make sure that you invite your prior satisfied clients and colleagues to leave a recommendation for you on LinkedIn. Finding a job is much easier when you have testimonials from people who have appreciated your work in the past.

However – make sure you're asking for them from people who really know your abilities. It's very bad form to ask for recommendations from people you haven’t worked with. And it screams unethical. And somehow…it always gets around if that's how you operate.

#3 – Update your content regularly

LinkedIn is not a platform where you can set it and forget it. In order to be seen as relevant in your field, you need to be updating your own content regularly. Additionally, joining a group and contributing to the collective knowledge within that group is a great way to boost your position as an authority figure in your field.

What part of LinkedIn do you like the most? What challenges you the most on this platform? Leave a comment below!

Why Twitter for your Business is More Important than Ever

It's the platform you might not have liked at first. You might have wondered how on earth 140 characters could be used for anything other than trying to sound like a teen wannabe.

And still, somehow, it survived. Twitter recently turned a whopping 7 years old!

Even if it isn't your favorite, though, using Twitter for your business still has tremendous value. Here's why it remains a strong platform and one that you absolutely must be using to reach your customers on social media.

Why Twitter for your Business Must Be Part of your Social Media Strategy

#1 – Twitter has 500 million users – and it's still growing.

It's not just the playground of teenagers. In fact, in case you didn't think there were enough people using Twitter for it to be worth your time, let me help you understand something. Every day, anywhere between 5000 to 10,000 people join Twitter. That's every day!

#2 – People who are thought leaders and leaders in their niche use Twitter in their business.

One of the best ways to begin being a thought leader is to follow those who are and observe what they do and learn from them. I didn't say to copy them, though many thought leaders have much in common with the way they use Twitter to share their knowledge and influence – and they're worth learning from.

#3 – Need market research? Get it on Twitter with no cost.

You can use Twitter search to find trending ideas and terms. You can also ask your Twitter followers a question and see what kind of responses you get. However you choose to use it, you have an amazing number of ideas and opinions at your fingertips to help you make key decisions about developing products or services that are most valuable and desirable to your particular niche.

#4 – Twitter allows you to connect with your followers on a personal level.

It's as simple as monitoring for mentions of your brand and direct messages sent to you. When you connect with someone new, send a hello and a question to get the conversation started. Notice – I didn't say send them a link about a product you sell. That's rude, just like going to a cocktail party and handing out business cards before you even meet the guests!

#5 – Twitter can spread your ideas faster than any other network.

Say something that's influential, inspirational, or just plain humorous, and it can spread like wildfire on Twitter! Business tips, quotes, and ideas can spread like wildfire on Twitter, and if it's your idea spreading, that's amazing value for your brand.

#6 – Twitter is used by journalists – your update could bring you national attention!

There are journalists who follow Twitter and look for trending or interesting topics to write a story. If it happens that it's your Tweet someone makes famous, just think about how that could boost traffic and sales from your site! (On the flip side, that means your Tweets need to be professional at all times!)

#7 – Twitter can drive immense amounts of traffic to your website.

Even if your Tweets aren't discovered by the LA Times or any other news publication, it still has the power to generate an amazing amount of traffic to your site. Tweet content from your site that is interesting and relevant to your followers, and watch your web traffic grow.

What's your favorite reason to use this 7-year-old platform? Leave a comment below!

Facebook Replies: How to Generate Deeper Engagement with your Audience

Well, we're still catching our breaths from the last round of Facebook changes, and, well, here we go again with the next! Earlier this week, Facebook announced that it is rolling out a threaded Facebook replies feature to their interface, and sure enough, if you look at comments made on your page, you can see it!

What this means is that when replying to a post, instead of just having the reply end up at the bottom where it might be confusing to follow who is replying to what (the original post or the comment), now people can actually respond to each other – like a real conversation.

In some places, there's a rumor that the Facebook Replies feature is only being rolled out to Fan Pages with over 10,000 followers, but there are some pages with lower numbers of followers and fans who appear to have it already.

At the very same time, Facebook is tweaking its algorithm behind the scenes to make sure that more active conversations and threads appear higher in a Page's posts than less active conversations.

Another limitation is that at the present time, the mobile version has not been updated to have the replies feature. For busy social media professionals, this could be a huge limitation. I don't know about you, but more and more it seems like I’m replying from a mobile device rather than a traditional laptop or desktop computer. And it seems to contradict earlier statements by Facebook that it values the quality of the mobile experience.

How Facebook Replies Contribute to Quality Engagement

The biggest way Facebook replies can benefit you as a brand is by facilitating quality engagement with your followers. This allows you to be more personal in your replies. It's just plain easier to reply to individual comments in an organized manner than it is to have to add your replies all at the end ofa string of comments in a way that doesn't make sense for future readers.

This is also likely to simply create more engagement as well as better engagement. It's just easier to converse back and forth in a threaded conversation than it is to add comments to the end of a mixed up bunch that doesn't necessarily apply to everyone reading.

The Danger of Facebook Replies for your Brand

Even though I think the Facebook Replies feature is going to be great for strengthening brand engagement, there's one catch. I think that this will require Page administrators to be more watchful over the quality of conversations happening on their pages. Threaded comments may turn out to make flame wars more likely to happen, as people engage directly with each other. Page administrators might need to add more moments throughout the day to monitor the conversation on their Pages, making sure that the kind of engagement is actually contributing to their brand and isn't 2 people off on a tangent flaming each other over a difference of opinion.

What do you think? Will Facebook Replies add quality to your followers' experience on your Fan Page? Leave a comment below!

Have you taken the time to define the Dream, Vision, Purpose, and Mission for your business? Even if you're not currently a business owner, would you be able to describe in a few short phrases what you're out to accomplish on this earth?

For the majority of business owners and people living their day-to-day lives, this is for the most part an afterthought. I mean, with our daily lives being so busy and wanting to "just get through" the day, there's often not that much time to reflect on what really is the driving force for what we are doing.<span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif";

One of my favorite things to talk about, you might have guessed, is how social media can benefit businesses. It's an amazing tool for helping a business reach out to its prospects and customers, not only to create profit for themselves, but to be able to provide value for their community (virtual or geographical).

But for all of the things that social media can do – there are a number of very important business skills that it cannot do. And if you want to know how to create a social media strategy for your business, you've got to know what social media can't do. This way, you won't expect too much from your social media presence and then wonder why it can't do these key tasks in your business.

#1: Social Media Cannot Provide Your Business With a Mission or Vision

While social media is a great tool for communicating your mission and vision with your audience, it's critical for you to know that they in themselves aren't your mission or vision, and your social media tools by themselves cannot provide or reveal that mission or vision to you. It takes honest, focused reflection to be able to determine these key items of focus, and if you aren't serious about determining what they are, you'll never be as effective in your social media strategy as you could be otherwise.

#2: Social Media Can't Care About Your Customers

Once again, social media is a tool for communicating what you feel to your customers. It by itself can't care for your customers. It can't convey an intention that isn't there in the first place. In fact – it merely expresses the thoughts and emotions you input into it in the form of content. If you don't care about your customers and prospects, one way or another, your social media updates will communicate this very fact to them, often when you least expect it. And that usually takes the form of a social media disaster gone viral.

It's critical that you approach your customers from the right perspective – truly, you must care about them in order to provide the most value for them. If you don't, sooner or later, they'll tell you goodbye.

#3: Social Media Can't Build Your Business Overnight

Somehow, people have gotten into the mindset of thinking that social media is a quick fix – that all it takes putting up a website and creating a few platforms, and you'll suddenly find yourself ranking number 1 on Google.

While there are strategies for moving up the search engine results pages quickly, getting found is only one piece of the social media marketing equation. There's also providing content people naturally want to keep reading and to share. There's providing customer service that sets you apart as truly legendary. And it's living up to every claim you make in your business with respect to your products or services.

Are there other things social media can't do that are important for business builders to know? Leave a comment!
